Islam Makhachev begins his reign as UFC welterweight champion at UFC 330, defending the 170-pound title for the first time against No. 1 contender Ian Machado Garry in Philadelphia.

Fresh off capturing gold in a second weight class, Makhachev arrives riding a remarkable 16-fight winning streak and looking to strengthen his claim as the world's best pound-for-pound fighter.

Standing in his way is Garry, one of the division's slickest strikers, whose elite takedown defence could provide the toughest stylistic test of Makhachev's championship reign so far.

Islam Makhachev: The pound-for-pound king begins a new chapter

Islam Makhachev (28-1) has established himself as one of the most dominant champions in UFC history. The Russian has won 16 consecutive fights since suffering the only defeat of his career back in 2015, combining suffocating wrestling with ever-improving striking to conquer two weight classes.

Now defending his welterweight title for the first time, Makhachev has the chance to extend that historic streak to 17 victories.

His numbers underline why so few have found success against him, averaging over three takedowns every 15 minutes while boasting an exceptional 91% takedown defence.

Whether the fight stays standing or hits the mat, Makhachev has repeatedly shown he can dictate where contests are fought, making him one of the most complete mixed martial artists on the planet.

Ian Machado Garry: Ireland's next star eyes a career-defining upset

Ian Machado Garry (17-1) has quickly emerged as one of the UFC's brightest contenders, earning this title opportunity through intelligent striking, disciplined game plans and outstanding defensive wrestling.

His lone professional defeat came against Shavkat Rakhmonov in 2024, but Garry responded by cementing himself as the division's top challenger.

Standing 6'3" with a four-inch reach advantage over Makhachev, Garry lands almost twice as many significant strikes per minute and has frustrated elite wrestlers throughout his UFC career.

His takedown defence will be the biggest talking point heading into UFC 330. Garry successfully defended 15 of 17 takedown attempts against both Shavkat Rakhmonov and Belal Muhammad, prompting UFC President Dana White to describe him as a "serious threat" if he can keep the fight standing.

Islam Makhachev vs Ian Machado Garry prediction

This fight is a classic clash of styles. Makhachev wants to close the distance, control the grappling exchanges and wear Garry down over five rounds.

Garry's best chance is to maintain range, use his height and reach advantage, and force the champion into a striking battle.

Few challengers have entered a Makhachev title fight with Garry's level of takedown defence, and if he consistently denies the champion's wrestling, the contest becomes far more competitive than many expect.

Former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira even believes Garry has "a very good chance" because of his tactical discipline. However, No. 3-ranked Michael Morales disagrees. “Zero, zero, zero chance. I’m 100 percent going with Makhachev. I think the fight spends the entire five rounds on the ground, or [Islam] is going to finish.”

The problem is that Makhachev has solved every puzzle placed in front of him during his 16-fight winning streak. His ability to adapt, chain together takedown attempts and dominate once the fight reaches the canvas has made him virtually unstoppable for over a decade.

Garry has the tools to make this competitive, particularly in the early rounds, but picking against Makhachev has become increasingly difficult. Expect the champion to gradually impose his wrestling before controlling the later rounds to retain his title.

Prediction: Islam Makhachev to win
